Illinois History
Illinois was discovered by French explorer Louis Jolliet and Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette in 1673. It was organized as a territory on February 3, 1809. Illinois was the 21st state to enter the Federal Union and was granted statehood December 3, 1818.
State Nickname: "The Prairie State"
Illinois is famous for its wide open spaces, also known as "the prairie." Less widely known are its forests, lakes, rivers and hills. When camping in Illinois, you can see a wide variety of surroundings!
Illinois Capital City: Springfield
Springfield is actually the third state capital. Kaskaskia was the capital of Illinois from the establishment of the state until 1820. Vandalia then became the capital from 1820 to 1839. Springfield has been the capital since December 1839.

He lived in Illinois until he became president in 1861. As the sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln is recognized for his noble vision, statesmanship, humanity, and political skill. His home is a National Historic Site in Springfield, Illinois administered by the National Park Service. The Lincoln tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois is a State Historic Site and one of the most visited places in Illinois.
